Reading Books

With Brian gone not only do I have to do chores, I have to read bedtime stories. Tough life I know. One of the big bedtime dilemmas is the girls all like different kinds of books. Emily likes chapter books, Aleah likes picture books and Colleen likes board books preferably with animals and flaps to open. Brian will often read Aleah a couple of picture books and then a chapter of a chapter book to Emily. This can take up to 1/2 hour (longer if he is into the chapter book) and I just don't read that long. Mean Mommy only reads for about 10 minutes, tops. So I need some ideas for books that would appeal to both Emily and Aleah.

Right now we are reading My Father's Dragon which works well because it is simple yet interesting, has good pictures on almost every page and has chapters you can read in 5 minutes. That means I can be a super nice mom and read TWO chapters.

I know I am not the only one with this problem. So this is your task: recommend books to me that Aleah and Emily would like-a big plus would be if they didn't have super long of chapters.

Also, some tips with how to do links to other pages and how to import web images (My Father's Dragon) would also be helpful. (I tried to follow their directions but it didn't seem to work.) Thanks!

I can't resist giving recommendations. You should do some Frog and Toad books (or anything Arnold Lobel). I think Emily and Aleah would like them, because they have "chapters", adorbale pictures, and, most important, they are hilarious--I don't mind reading them over and over, because they are so funny to me, too.

As for Colleen, do you have any Maisy books? They have lots of flaps. And all my babies/toddlers have enjoyed all the Sandra Boynton books. My favorite is "Barnyard Dance", because you sort of sing/chant it, like a square dance call.

As for making a link:
1. Go to the exact address (URL) that you want to link to. Highlight the URL and then push Ctrl and C at the same time to copy it.
2. When you are in compose mode for your post, click and drag over the word(s) you want to turn into a link to higlight them
3. Push the "link" button. It is at the top of your compose box, where the bold and italics buttons are. It is a picture of a world with a chain link in front of it (I think it looks like a world wearing sunglasses).
4. A little box will pop up, with a blank space for you to put an address. Push Ctrl and V at the same time to paste the URL into that box.
5. Save and publish your post. Your link should be a different color and should take you where you want to go.

PS- if what you want to link to is in a specific post of Brian's, click on the title of that post--not just the title of the blog, so that your link will take you directly to that post.

OK everyone, when you think of recommendations keep in mind that we have over 300 picture books and at least 50 kid chapter books at home. I need "outside the box" ideas. We have and LOVE Frog and Toad and have read them TONS - Emily considers them kid books though. We also have and love the Mouse and the Motorcycle books, Mrs. Piggiwiggle (looong chapters but great), the Ramona books (Aleah doesn't like), the Fudge series (we've tried reading those before to Aleah and she didn't like them but maybe she would now), the "real" Winnie the Pooh, the Betsy/Tacy series and Little House books (and a lot of other random ones). So, I need something Emily hasn't read that Aleah would like. Or picture books that are sooo cool that Emily would like them. I don't know if it is possible but try to help me out.

I haven't read them, but Aunt Pat swears by Bunnicula, the Celery Stalks at Midnight, etc. I know, how could I have missed them after 34 years?! We're back to No Coins, Please, and I can hear Eric laughing out loud as John reads to him. I still love the Fairy Tale book, but it might be too scary for Aleah. Good luck!

What about the great brain books or the Soup Books? Magic tree house is a favorite here. Very short chapters and pics on almost every page. You can visit ancient civilizations and animal habitats around the world. Matthew even started carrying a notebook to jot notes down, just like Jack.
