Block 5 - Tiny Piecing Sampler

I don't think that there is anything more classic than a pinwheel shape in quilting. It is simple, fun, and cute. In this quilt block tutorial, we will make 4 pinwheels out of foundation paper pieced Scrappy Triangles and join them together with some background squares. 

There is both a 6" and 12" version of the block. The size of the squares and triangles are different, but the block construction is the same for both blocks.

Let's get going!

Instructions

For the 6" Block

Make: 

(16) 1" Scrappy Triangles

Cut:

(5) White 2 1/2" squares

For the 12" Block

Make: 

(16) 2" Scrappy Triangles

Cut:

(5) White 4 1/2" squares

1. Lay out four Scrappy Triangles in the shape of a pinwheel.
2. Sew together into columns and press towards the unpieced triangle.
3. Sew columns together. Press seams open.
4. Repeat to make 4 pinwheel units.

4. Alternate the pinwheel units and the white background squares.

5. Sew units together into rows. Press towards the white squares.
6. Sew rows together and press.

There you go!

Block 4 - Tiny Piecing Sampler

Hello! It's week 4 in the Tiny Piecing Sampler. I think this might be one of the cutest blocks of the sampler, but maybe that's just because I used one of my favorite American Jane prints in it. It was one of the scraps that I had been holding onto for a long time. Anyone else do that? Well, it is fun to finally see it in a quilt. :)

This quilt block goes together fairly quickly and you 'only' have to make 8 Scrappy Triangles. The directions for both the 6" and 12" versions follow.

Instructions

6" Block

Make:

(8) 1" Scrappy Triangles

Cut:

White
(1) 2 1/2" square
(4) 1 1/2" squares
(4) 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles

Pink
(2) 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles
(2) 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles

12" Block

Make:
(8) 2" Scrappy Triangles

Cut:
White
(1) 4 1/2" square
(4) 2 1/2" squares
(4) 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles

Pink
(2) 2 1/2" x4 1/2" rectangles
(2) 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles

1.  Lay out the Scrappy Triangles and the other squares and rectangles as illustrated above. (Getting all of these arranged correctly is the hardest step. It is smooth sailing from here on out.)

2.  Sew the Scrappy Triangles and the adjoining squares and rectangles together. Press the seams of the Scrappy Triangles open to reduce bulk and press seams towards the white squares and rectangles.

3.  Sew the small Pink rectangle to the top and bottom of the large central square. Press towards the pink.

4.  Sew the middle block units together. First, sew the short Scrappy Triangle sets to the large pink rectangles and then onto the middle unit.  Press as indicated by the arrows.

5.  Sew the larger Scrappy Triangle sets onto the top and bottom of the center unit as shown.

There you are! All done!

Block 3 - Tiny Piecing Sampler

Sometimes the simplest things are the best. A whole quilt made just with half square triangles arranged like this has been on my bucket list for years, but for now, let's just make one block.

The six and 12 inch block use different sized triangles for this block, but the construction is the same.

Instructions:

6" Block
Make
(9) 2" Scrappy Triangles

12" Block
Make
(16) 3" Scrappy Triangles

-Arrange Scrappy Triangles into rows.
-Sew together into rows.
-Press.
-Sew rows together.

Easy-peasy Lemon-squeesy.

Block 2 - Tiny Piecing Sampler

I think this is one of the funnest blocks. It's simple but when multiple are put together, the chains (the 4-patch units) make great secondary patterns.

With this set of blocks, the 12" block is simply made from four of the 6" blocks.

Instructions: 

 6" Block
Make
(2) 3" Scrappy Triangles
Cut
(4) 2" squares from white fabric
(4) 2" squares from yellow print fabric

 6" Block
Make
(8) 3" Scrappy Triangles
Cut
(16) 2" squares from white fabric
(16) 2" squares from yellow print fabric

-Sew the yellow and white squares together into 4-patch units as illustrated.
-Arrange the 3" Scrappy Triangles and 4-patch units as illustrated.
-Sew together into rows.
-Sew rows together

For the 12" Block, repeat to make (4) 6" blocks.
-Arrange the 4 block in two rows of two. Play with the orientation, if desired.
-Sew together into rows.
-Sew rows together

Easy peasy, lemon squeezie! :)

Note: We are going to be out of town next week for Thanksgiving, and internet access is going to be iffy. So I am going to skip posting next Tuesday and will be back with Block 3 on Nov 27th. If you are feeling itchy to sew, I'd just make a ton of Scrappy Triangles, especially 1" and 2" blocks. Then they will be ready to go as we make future blocks.

Block 1 - Tiny Piecing Sampler

Welcome to Block 1 in the Tiny Piecing Sampler! These blocks have been a lot of fun to make, and I can't wait for it to all come together! Scroll down for instructions for both the 6" & 12" versions.

Instructions:

6" Block
Make:
(6) 2" Scrappy Triangles*
Cut:
(3) 2 1/2" white squares

12" Block
Make:
(10) 3" Scrappy Triangles*
Cut:

(2) 3 1/2"white squares
(1) 6 1/2" white square

*Note: regular half square triangles can be substituted in for Scrappy Triangles or you can find templates for the Scrappy Triangles here.


6" Block (6 1/2" unfinished)
-Arrange squares and Scrappy Triangles as illustrated.
-Sew together into rows and press.
-Sew rows together.

12" Block (12 1/2" unfinished)
-Arrange squares and Scrappy Triangles as illustrated.
-Sew the two triangles on either side of the middle square together and press.
-Sew all units together into rows and press.
-Sew rows together.

Fresh & Scrappy Block of the Month Club

I am so excited to officially announce the release the 2019 Fresh & Scrappy Block of the Month Club! This quilt is a cheerful celebration of all things scrappy. I designed this Block of the Month specifically to bust through fabric scraps and help you tame those scrap bins. (It's not just me, right?)

One of my favorite things about this quilt is the variety of blocks. They are going to spark your creativity and keep you engaged and excited. There are flying geese, fans, log cabins, stars, flowers, chains and more! Most of the piecing is standard, but there will be some machine appliqué and the opportunity to make a block with curved seams. (There will be an option to appliqué this block, if desired.) There are also a variety of block sizes. There are 8", 12" and 16" squares, not to mention 8" x 12" and 8" x16" rectangles. There's nothing boring about this quilt!

Here are the details:

-The finished size of the quilt is 56" x 72".

-On the first of each month, starting January 2019, you will receive a pdf quilt block pattern via email. It will contain cutting and piecing instructions for that month’s block, along with tips for using scraps. We will usually make two of the given block, but some months we will make more. I have kept those blocks fast and simple, so it won’t be overwhelming.

-This pattern is perfect for both confident beginners and longtime quilters who want to play with their scraps!

-I am selling on Etsy and the patterns will be sent to the address associated with your Etsy account. If you would like me to email the patterns to a different address, please let me know in the Notes to Seller box when you check out. 

-Today you will be able to download and print the Fabric Requirements and a Coloring Page. Use the coloring page to try out different color combinations or to color in the blocks as we make them.

Curious about the Fabric Requirements? You will need:

Low-volume  (whites and creams)

4 yards of assorted low volume fabric, with at least 6 different prints.

Red

3/4 yard total of assorted reds, with at least 5 different prints.

Green

3/8 yard of assorted greens, with at least 3 different prints.

Yellow,  Aqua,  Dark Blue  &  Pink

1/2 yard total of assorted prints for each color, with at least 4 different prints per color.

Orange,  Lime Green,  Light Blue  &  Violet-red

1/4 yard total of assorted prints for each color, with at least 2 different prints per color.

Paper Backed Fusible Interfacing like HeatnBond

1 1/4" yards

Welcome to the Tiny Piecing Sampler

Last year, I shared a pattern for 6" Scrappy Triangles each Tuesday during the Year of Scrappy Triangles. It was so much fun to bust scraps with those  foundation paper pieced half square triangles! (If you missed it, you can find links to all the patterns here.)

I want to keep the momentum from the last year, and have decided to post tutorials for quilt blocks that use the 1", 2" & 3" Scrappy Triangles in my Tiny Piecing Collection. (You can find patterns here.) Each Tuesday for the next 12 weeks, I will post a tutorial for a 6" and 12" version of the same quilt block. I'll post links to all the blocks here. By the end we'll have enough blocks for a cute mini quilt or small throw. Swing by next Tuesday to find the first tutorial.

Block 52 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

I feel like we need to have a party. Everyone just plan on coming over to my house this evening with all their quilt blocks. :) Because we did it! One year of weekly Scrappy Triangles! That is huge. Give yourselves a big pat on the back and go brag to a friend. :)

My Scrappy Triangle Layout

I have to admit something. I jumped ahead and made the last few blocks early and my finished quilt is at the quilters right now. (!!!) I cannot wait to get it back and show you! Because I have been using low-volume/lights all year, the pattern is fairly subtle, but I like it. I wanted something calm and neutral for my bedroom. If you can call a quilt with hundreds of different fabrics calm?  :)

Looking forward, I am going to start a smaller short term scrappy project. Next week I am going to start posting mini tutorials for quilt blocks made with the smaller 1", 2" & 3" Scrappy Triangles. There will be both 6" and 12" options and there will be 12 blocks total. I've made a couple up and they are so. stinking. cute. Stop by next Tuesday and see first one. Block 49 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

It's starting to feel like fall! Well, not really. It's going to be in the 80's today, but the leaves are starting to change colors. I tried to use some of the fall colors in these blocks.

This is another scrappy triangle that would look great repeated. I really have a thing for small triangles with perfect points. :) Enjoy!

Block 47 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Hi there! We got back from our France trip last week and I think I am finally getting back into the swing of things. It feels like forever since I've sewn Scrappy Triangles and I was glad to get back to sewing!

I designed these simple strip blocks because I realized that I am going to be short of blocks for the queen sized quilt I want to make. I figured I could make a ton of these fairly quickly to fill in the gap.

Block 46 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Hi there! Here is the next block in the series. I really like this one. The quilt block unit in the corner is called a 'Hidden Square' and you can find them in all sorts of quilt patterns.

I just want to let you know, that I am going to be taking next week off. My husband and I are going to France (our first big kid-free trip!) and I don't want to have to fuss with scheduling a post before I go.

I am so excited to go back to France. I was there for a year and a half as a missionary 20 years ago and haven't been back since. We are going to spend a few days in Paris, followed by a weekend in Brittany (west coast). I can't wait! I'll be posting tons of pictures for my kids in Instagram stories if you want to follow our trip. I am @sewn.by.leila.gardunia.

Block 45 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. Vacation, the Iowa State Fair, packing for college, gathering school supplies for all kids, suit shopping, hair cuts, dropping off at college (lots of tears were shed, and I'm not sappy), then cleaning and recovering from the whirlwind. It has been crazy, and I am trying to find the new normal with all the kids at school. We'll see how it goes. I need to get myself organized.

But I did manage to draft all the rest of the blocks yesterday for the Year of Scrappy Triangles. Crazy that we just have a few more weeks. It was hard to come up with designs for the last few. Some of them, like this one, are variations on previous blocks. I hope you enjoy making it. It uses 2 1/2" strips, so dig out those leftover strips and let's get sewing! :)

Block 44 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

The last two weeks have been super busy. Vacation (which is suppose to be relaxing?) and now getting ready for the first day of school for the younger kids and driving my oldest to college tomorrow morning. Crazy!

Block 43 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

I love this block! It is rather time consuming, but I am loving those little stripes. Plus, the secondary design is pretty fun.

I used pink scraps from the quilt I am currently working on for my daughter. She leaves for college in two weeks and I want to have it done by then. I'm almost done with the blocks. "All" I have to do is sew them together, baste, quilt, and bind. Oh, and we are going to be on vacation for one of those weeks.... I'll let you know how it goes.

As we are going on one last/first trip of the summer next week, there will not be a block posted next Tuesday, but we will get back into the swing of things the following week. I'll see you then!

Block 42 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Block 42 - the perfect block for using up narrow strips and leftover charm squares!

I have had such a fun time making these blocks. I love finding bits of favorite fabrics that remind me of other projects and quilts.

Block 41 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

I am really loving this week's block. The strip of tiny triangles at the bottom reminds me of the Scrappy Strips in the Tiny Piecing Collection. (swoon) Not only are they super cute, but I was able to use some 2 1/2" precut squares that had been hanging out in my scrap basket forever.

Extra bonus? My husband really likes the horses. When I told him that was good because they were going to end up on our bed, he quipped, "Horses on the bed? That's going to be messy!" Eye roll. He thinks he's funny.

Block 40 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

Hi there! Here is Block 40 in the Year of Scrappy Triangles. I can't believe we are up to 40 already! Only 11 more. Crazy.

This is another block that is perfect for using up strips of all lengths and widths. So many strips - yet there are still so many strips in my strip pile! I think they are multiplying. :)

How are you guys feeling about these Scrappy Triangles? At the beginning, a couple people asked if we would continue through 100. Anyone still want to do that? Or have you gotten your fill? I don't know if I am up for 48 more weeks of posting, but I would consider writing a pattern for the remaining 48 blocks if there was interest. Significant interest. So let me know what you think.

A few months ago, I started playing around with the idea of making tiny Scrappy Triangles. How small could I make them?

I drafted 16 tiny 1" Scrappy Triangles, then drafted some more in 2" and 3". Then came the 1" and 2" Scrappy Strips. I'm calling this set of patterns The Tiny Piecing Collection and they are going to be available Thursday (6/28)! Let me give you a sneak peek at this new collection!

Here are some of the 2" Scrappy Triangles. There are templates for 18 triangles in this set and I think they are the cutest thing ever. The great thing about these triangles is that you can use your smallest scraps to make them.

The Scrappy Strips are simply a row of Scrappy Triangles sewn together as one unit. Sewing them this way speeds the piecing and reduces bulk from seam allowances. In addition to strips of Scrappy Triangles, there are also striped and abstract strips in each Scrappy Strip set.

Plus, each set of templates comes with a pattern for a bonus quilt block or other small project. Here is the quilt block made with the 2" Scrappy Strips.

I always think it is fun to see behind the scenes shots, so here is a picture of my photo shoot set up. Yup, that is my ancient cutting board being used as a background for the 3" Scrappy Triangles on my deck. That's how the pros do it. ;)
