Block 17 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

I'm not going to lie, this week's block in a Year of Scrappy Triangles is a killer. It's not hard, it just takes longer than usual. There are tons of little strips in this log-cabin inspired Scrappy Triangle! But, on the bright side, I got to use up a ton of narrow strips. And that is kind of how it goes. The smaller the pieces, the longer it is going to take to make.

I didn't overthink fabric placement in these blocks. I just grabbed small scraps and sewed them on. But, if you do pay attention to placement there are a lot of fun things you can do with this block. Here are a few ideas, but really, the sky is the limit!

Hello! It's time for another Scrappy Triangle pattern!

If you are new to the Year of Scrappy Triangles, every Tuesday I post a foundation paper pieced pattern for a 6" Scrappy Triangle. The triangles are fast, fun, and a great way to use scraps. Not sure about foundation paper piecing? Think sewing quilt blocks on the back of paper is weird? I hear you. I put off learning to foundation paper piece for years because the process was so intimidating, but it didn't end up being as bad as I thought. I actually liked it! If you want to give it a try, or need some extra tips, I've written The Ultimate Guide to Foundation Paper Piecing. Check it out. You'll be foundation paper piecing like a pro in no time.

But on to Block 16. This week's block is made with 1 3/4" wide strips of all lengths. It's a great way to use all those extra narrow strips. Got narrower strips? Me too! There is a block coming up that uses 1 1/4" strips, so hold on to those.

I like the secondary designs made by placing 4 of the same block together. This one looks woven!

*If you are having a hard time getting the block to print to the correct size, disable the "Fit to Size" option and check the scale. My computer likes to print at 93%. (Don't ask me why I would want anything printed at 93%, but it thinks I do.) If that doesn't do it, download the pdf to your computer and print from the downloaded version. I don't know why this makes a difference, but often it does. 

Year of Scrappy Triangles - Block 15

Hello! Today I am in sunny California - a nice change from below freezing temperatures. I've been to see the zoo in San Deigo and wandered around town and the beach. Any other must dos while I'm here?

This week's block is a simplified variation of Block 9. While I am using scraps for the pieced parts of the block, I find I keep buying a fat quarters here and there that I think would be good backgrounds. The text and aqua chevron prints are recent purchases.  sigh.  At least they were bought for a purpose and not just to sit in my stash. But really I have actually been pretty restrained with buying fabric just to "have on hand". Well, except for the new Heather Ross fabric I just preordered here... At least I know I'm not alone in my fabric love!

Block 13 - Year of Scrappy Triangles

 Happy New Year! A new year, a new block, a new start on all things Quilty!

This week I took some of my larger scraps and cut them up to make these blocks. It was a good way to make a lot of blocks quickly. The squirrels weren't technically scraps, but I had to have them in the quilt. I think they are the cutest things ever! I didn't want the blocks to be too matchy-matchy in the final quilt, so I varied the large 'background' triangles.

It has been fun to see all of the different variations you have been making on Instagram. Have fun with this block too!
