While I was making lunch today I looked out the window and saw a red-tailed hawk sitting on our bush. I pointed him out to Aleah and she asked what he was doing. I said he was probably resting or looking for food and that he ate mice and small birds. "That's good he eats mice," she said. With full disclosure in mind I added that he sometimes ate rabbits too. I thought Aleah might be upset about that but she surprised me by saying, "I don't like rabbits. They eat your beets and carrots and cabbage. That's good that he eats rabbits. Rabbits eat your garden." Not upset at all but putting rabbits on the same pest level as mice.
Aleah surprised us a few weeks ago too. Brian was saying he would like to cook up a leg of lamb and Aleah asked if that came from a pig (just after we buchered Big Pig-she also asked if chicken came from pig). No, it comes from a lamb. Can you eat other parts of lambs? Brian enumerated the different cuts and how delicious they are and Aleah decided that we needed to buy some lambs for our farm too, so we could have some good things to eat.
I am impressed how down to earth and stoic she is about animals eating animals (even cute ones) and us eating animals (even cute ones). I think this "farm life" stuff is paying off.

I removed the post because Brian commented as me that Aleah was right and rabbits are EVIL. It was just confusing as a "Leila said."
