This dress I made for Emily won Grand Prize
in the Children's Dresses Tippecanoe County Fair
July 2008
It is that time again! I LOVE going to The Fair and it is even funner if you have something entered in the fair. There are sooo many categories - I know you can enter something. Cakes, cookies, canned items, photographs, drawings, all manner of sewing and needlework, flower arranging and vegetables are only a few of the options - really, the categories are endless. There are even "under 16 years-old" categories so you can get your kids involved even if they are not in 4-H. A great way to keep them busy making stuff and doing extra chores to earn "fair money."
"But my stuff isn't good enough," I can hear you say. Who cares! You should see some of the stuff that is there - some is good and some is...well...let's just say The Fair needs a shot of young trendy creative exhibitors. The whole point of The Fair is to go and look at stuff, get ideas and have fun. It won't be as much fun if your stuff isn't there. The Local County Fairs don't get many entries and need your help or else they will be totally LAME. In all honesty, there were only four entries in the dress competition that I won.
Go! Search for your Local County Fair and Enter something! Our deadline is July 1st so hurry up! Let me know what you submit!

What are you submitting this year?
I'm not sure. I may enter some lemon curd I just canned. There is also an entry where they send you fabric and you make a 12x12 quilt block of your choice. That way everyone is using the same materials. Emily is working on some pastel/pencil drawings and Aleah is making a bracelet.
It is also fun to find out when they sell/auction the baked goods that are judged.
Our fair isn't until the middle of September. Weird, no? I've already planned for a year to enter some tatting I made - I made it for the Tipp Co. fair last year, but they printed the wrong entry date in the book, and when I showed up to submit my entry the judging was already over. So, maybe this is my lucky year...
I was thinking of entering the dress I made for Eleanor last year. It was designed to look like Kit's birthday dress. My sewing isn't the best, but I did alter patterns (went from a zippered back to a full wrap-around dress) and design a sleeve. Might that work?
Lelia,
I'm inspired. Unable to do the fair thing this year. However, I totally want to try to at least get the kids entered in something next year. I just hope I can remember.
Congrats on winning 1st place! It's fun to win, even when there isn't much competition. That's what happened to me last year...I swept the category, but there were really only 2 or 3 other entries besides mine.
This year I'm entering my pig and piglets (from LiEr's pattern) and an indoor hopscotch game in the Toys category, a few children's outfits I made in the Clothing category, and a loaf of bread in the Bread category.
Hey, Leila, guess what, I won! :) My walnut pie....the tatting got 2nd place, and no wonder, looking at the amazing thing that won.
