1st Winner!
Good News! My brother Chris and his wife had been meaning to go get their long term food storage for awhile now and yesterday they hauled home 700lbs of wheat, rice, beans, etc. He said my post motivated them to finally do it. I'm tearing up. Warm fuzziness. They will be getting a fall colored quilt in the mail before summer. I want to make more, I've got lots of pattern ideas I want to try...
Anyway, Chris and I were talking and he mentioned the only big thing they needed to take care of was water. I told him about these water boxes I had seen on Food Storage Made Easy. They are boxes that hold a 5 gallon bag you fill with water. Easy to stack and store, transport if you need and they are refillable and have a spout for dispensing water. You can find them at Emergency Essentials. They are $35 for a set of 5. More expensive than saving 2 liter bottles but handy.
The Leila Method of rotating your three month supply of food is use it all up - hope the big disaster doesn't happen when you only have a weeks worth of green beans left- and then buy more. Nothing runs out at the same time and well, it works for me right now. If you want to have a more organized method of rotating your food storage check out these cardboard organizers at Can Organizer. They are fairly inexpensive, especially when you compare them with the plastic ones (the reason I developed the Leila Method). There is also a post about how to build your own cardboard can organizers at Food Storage Made Easy. It's pretty cool.

If you have a grat idea on how to fit food storage in a small apartment. let me know.. Thanks for the info.
It is hard when you don't have that much space. Long term wheat, rice and beans come packed in boxes that fit under beds. Same with the water storage. Three months of rotating storage might be more tricky but I know with some creative thinking you can find room for some. Don't write it off. It is something we can all do.
