Easter Eggs

Last week we noticed some house finches were building a nest on the top of one of the porch pillars.  Then for some reason the next day they tore it up and moved it.  I assumed that they thought there was too much activity on the porch and decided to move to a nearby tree.

Then Brian told me that they had moved their nest into our wreath.   I don't know how he found it, you can't see it from the front of the wreath.

But if you look from the side, you can see the nest built between the wall and the side of the wreath.  How cool is that?

The mama bird got scared off the nest as we came home from church today, so I took a moment to take a picture of the nest.  I don't know why one egg is out of the nest or why the first egg laid isn't speckled, but we decided to let nature take it's course and leave it be.

Here is mama house finch in a nearby tree waiting till things calm down to come back to the nest.  We will keep you posted on egg numbers and hatching.  I know you are on the edge of your seat.  ;)

These are the eggs the girls decorated and hunted for yesterday.  I actually followed the dye recipe on the back of the McCormick food coloring and the colors came out great.  We used our brown eggs for the warm colors and the green eggs for the cool colors.

How fun for the birds to build their nest right on your door where you all can watch what happens. I am glad you are feeling better. Sounds like spring has come to Iowa.

I _am_ on the edge of my seat--I want to see baby bird pictures. That is puzzling about the speckled/non-speckled eggs. It'd be cool if it indicated the gender of the bird-to-be. I love when you updateyour blog, Leila!

what a fun experience for your children to experience and compare to "their life experience" this year.
